Karen became interested in worm farms at the beginning of last year. Knowing that we were still looking for a more efficient way to deal with our organic waste (which was composted on a semi-regular basis) she proposed buying a worm farm and keeping it in her backyard; and for Thought Partners to invest in a couple of thousand new team members to gobble up our food scraps and coffee grounds. The board accepted her proposal and in March 2008, we opened our Paparangi 'branch'.
The way the system works is that we put any food scraps (excluding meat and dairy products) into a plastic bag in our freezer and our coffee grounds into re-usable plastic containers. Every weekend, Karen takes the accumulated waste home and feeds it to the worms. After an initial set-up phase, which meant the worm farm 'processing power' was still building up, we are now able to send all our used paper towels home with Karen too!
Occasionally there is some 'overflow' which gets relegated to the compost but all in all are tickled pink with the little wrigglers.
